What is Iyengar Yoga?
Precision, alignment and progressive learning, a method for every body.
Developed by B.K.S. Iyengar
Iyengar Yoga is a method of yoga developed by the late B.K.S. Iyengar, one of the most influential yoga teachers of the 20th century. It's practised and taught worldwide, with certified teachers held to consistent standards through organisations like Iyengar Yoga UK.
Rather than flowing quickly between postures, Iyengar Yoga encourages students to hold poses with attention, working through the precise actions and alignment within each one. This methodical approach is what gives the style its name and its reputation for depth and clarity.
Three ideas at the heart of Iyengar Yoga
Alignment
Precise, detailed instruction on how each part of the body should work in a pose, reducing the risk of injury and building genuine strength.
Sequencing
Poses are taught in a considered order that builds understanding and prepares the body and mind for what comes next.
Use of Props
Blocks, chairs, straps, bolsters and the wall are used to make postures accessible to everyone. It's not a sign of "not being flexible enough".
Accessible to every body
Because of its emphasis on alignment, precision and the intelligent use of props, Iyengar Yoga is accessible to a wide range of people regardless of age, experience or flexibility.
People come to practise for many different reasons: improving strength, flexibility, posture, mobility and balance, or simply for general wellbeing. Whatever brings you to your mat, classes are built to help you progress safely, at your own pace.
